In the 12th century a Romanesque castle, most probably founded by the Bishop of Passau, stood on the site of the present chateau. From 1395 until World War II the structure was - almost without interruption - the property of the Liechtenstein family. The chateau's present appearance is based on Baroque adaptations carried out at the turn of the 18th century according to plans by G.G.Tencalla,D.Martinelli and A. Beduzzi. Valtice boasts interiors which stand out thanks to their splendid decoration.The chateau's curiosity was a covered Baroque theatre which was supplemented by a garden stage. In the 1800s the landscaped Valtice Park was interconnected with the surroundings of Lednice Chateau.Today the whole area features on the UNESCO world heritage list.
