Old-New synagogue
The Old-New Synagogue (Staronova Synagoga) was built around 1270 and is the oldest synagogue in Europe. It has been a refuge many times over the years for the Jews of Josefov and still serves as a religious center today. It was here that Rabbi Low is said to have stored the famous Golem, a creature made from clay that many Jews believe came to life by magical means. Why is it called the Old-New Synagogue? Because it was known only as the New Synagogue until another (newer) one was built nearby. That synagogue was later destroyed.
