History

The extensive Rožmberk Palace, which went through some interesting architectural development from the Roman period until the present, is associated with significant contemporary events. It was established by the aristocratic Lords family from Rožmberk that initiated its construction in 1545. The four-wing construction was later extended by Švamberk and Rožmitál House, and a garden was created in its surrounding. The charm and comfort of the palace was also enjoyed by important people. For example, in 1587, Vilém of Rožmberk celebrated his fourth marriage with Polyxena of Pernštejn there. A long and significant period started under the rule of Marie Terezie; she had the palace rebuilt for the seats of thirty orphaned noble women. The project and the reconstruction was the work of the court builder Nicolo Paccassi. The Institute of Noblewomen was managed by the abbess and her foster daughters lived their life in a harmony with strict rules. For example, they were not allowed to attend public shows or fancy-dress balls; however, they were allowed to visit an opera once per week. The Institute of Noble Women was abandoned after the establishment of Czechoslovakia and the building was rented to the Ministry of Internal Affairs that used it until 1990.

In the 1990s, archeological research was performed based on which the Prague Castle Administration initiated the overall reconstruction of the palace. During 1996 – 2007, the original baroque appearance was remitted to the Institute of Noble Women. The newly reconstructed premises are gaining a new dimension. Café Rožmberský palác is based here; it is run by the gastronomical Vyšehrad 2000 Group. Other premises are determined for lease in the case of public and private events. Catering services on these premises are also provided by the Vyšehrad 2000 Group.
